China a hub for Overseas Education

Being the most populous country in the world, China has served as the nation sending the most number of students abroad. In 2018, more than 662k students left China to pursue higher studies abroad in nations like the US, the UK, India and Australia to name a few. Such a high number makes China the prime origin of International Students across the globe, followed by India and The US.

However, it would be misleading to state that students only travel out of China to pursue higher studies. China is also the 3rd ranked country which hosts the largest number of Overseas Students, only after the US, and the UK.

More than 490k International Students are currently studying in China, making it an emerging hub of Overseas Education. South Korea, the United States, Thailand, Pakistan and India are the top 5 countries from where most international students travel to China, accounting for more than 70% of the total population of foreign Students there. Nearly 80% of foreign students in China are from Asia or the Middle East.

Clinical Medicine, Engineering and Economics are the top courses in which most International Students enroll in. The Peking University in Beijing hosts the largest number of Overseas Students in China. Tsinghua University also serves more than 2,700 foreign students.

However, a census in 2019 revealed that 90% of Chinese students return back to China after obtaining their higher education from abroad. The reason for this is yet to be studied about.
